Markdown shorthands in the rich text editor

In addition to using keyboard shortcuts, you can also use markdown-like shorthands to quickly create headings or list items.

When you type the following markdown shorthands at the beginning of a line of text, the line of text will change its formatting according to these rules:

    ShorthandChanges formatting to…
    H1 Heading
    ## H2 Heading
    ### H3 Heading
    #### H4 Heading
    ##### H5 Heading
    ###### H6 Heading
    1. Numbered list item
    1) Numbered list item
    Unordered list item
    Unordered list item

When you type the following markdown shorthands around a part of your text, the text inside the shorthand characters gets formatted according to these rules:

    ShorthandChanges formatting to…
    *your text* Bold
    _your text_ Italic
    `your text` Monospaced

These format changes can be undone by Ctrl + Z (⌘ + Z on Mac).
