Get familiar with the individual stages of a successful content migration, so that you know what to expect and who to involve during the migration.
What to expect?
Migrations from other content management systems (CMS) involve several stages that can take a few months to complete. The exact time depends on the amount and complexity of the content you need to migrate.
Audit. Look at what you have and identify the content worth keeping. Make sure to reserve enough time for the audit to avoid migrating bloat.
Export. Once you identify what’s important, it’s time to export it from your current system into a computer-friendly format.
Set up. Create a new home for your content. Set up your new Kontent.ai project, along with its content model according to your needs and best practices.
Map. With your audited content exported and the new project set up, it’s time to define the mapping between the two. Your new project won’t be a 1:1 copy of the original.
Import. When you’ve mapped everything, it’s time to import the content to your Kontent.ai project.
After a successful import, you can show your content creators what their content looks like in the new project.
Who to involve?
When migrating to a new system such as Kontent.ai, you need to involve both technical and business stakeholders. While technical stakeholders, such as developers or solution architects, can write migration scripts and take care of the technical parts of the migration process, business stakeholders know the existing content and understand how content creators are used to work.Business stakeholders are the ones to decide which content is worth migrating. Because content can get stale and unused over time, you often don’t need to transfer everything you’ve accumulated over time.
