Data sovereignty with flexible data localization

As the importance of storing personal data and privacy becomes increasingly critical each year, authorities worldwide have initiated measures to ensure data sovereignty. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter? Let’s dive in.

Data sovereignty dictates that digital data is subject to the laws of the country where it is stored. Essentially, where your data resides can affect how it is handled, protected, and accessed.

Primary data location options

To aid organizations in complying with these data sovereignty laws, Kontent.ai, in a multi-tenant solution, offers four primary data locations for storing customer content. In most cases, laws require data storage within some wide geographic boundaries (for example, in the European Union and the United States). Therefore, Kontent.ai supports by default to store customer content in four primary locations:

  • North America, East US (Virginia)
  • Europe, West Europe (Netherlands)
  • Australia, East Coast (New South Wales)
  • Canada, Central Canada (Toronto)

These locations generally meet the needs of most use cases. However, there are situations where state laws, industry-specific regulations, or internal policies demand data storage within the same country. To address these specific needs, Kontent.ai also offers to store the data in a custom location.

It is important to note that while Kontent.ai meticulously manages data storage, third-party suppliers may be involved in handling processes such as the transfer of metadata, contact details, or other personal data about users or website visitors of Kontent.ai. This transfer could potentially occur outside of the specified territory. For detailed information on how personal data is managed, please refer to our section on Personal data in Kontent.ai.

Custom data location

For organizations with more stringent requirements, Kontent.ai offers the option of storing content in over 40 regions through a single-tenant instance of Kontent.ai. This custom location option not only aids in compliance with specific regulations but also accelerates data accessibility. Single-tenant infrastructure ensures completely isolated data storage from other customers, enhancing compliance adherence and minimizing the risk of data theft.
Regarding data in transit, Kontent.ai is designed to effectively and quickly distribute your content worldwide. But even here, dedicated infrastructure brings more flexibility and also allows customers to restrict access to their data on the API level based on IP, geolocation, and other aspects.

Choosing the right option for your needs

If you operate in a highly regulated sector like healthcare, finance, or government, choosing a dedicated data center may be the best option. Not only does it help ensure compliance with relevant laws, but thanks to its greater flexibility and single-tenant architecture, it allows multiple customizations to increase security, privacy, or overall performance. If your data regulation requirements are less stringent, one of the four public regions should offer a stable and secure environment for most customers.

Kontent.ai provides strong data sovereignty and localization options that enable organizations to manage their data effectively while adhering to relevant laws. By utilizing dedicated data centers and selecting the appropriate data storage locations, businesses can align their content management practices with their data governance policies.

We understand the importance of meeting your specific requirements and are committed to assisting you in achieving compliance with relevant data regulations.
