The term “Composable DXP” describes a new type of Digital Experience Platform (DXP). What does it mean, and how does it differ from a monolithic DXP solution?
Why organizations are moving from Monolithic to Composable DXP
A digital experience platform enables companies to optimize the digital customer journey as well as manage all their content and campaigns using one central hub. Due to the proliferation of digital channels and the complexity of existing technology and integrations, the market has begun to evolve in terms of the capabilities that customers want in their DXP solution. According to Gartner, “most existing products marketed as digital experience platforms (DXPs) are monolithic in architecture and slow to react to market changes.”1
In other words, monolithic DXPs might be a good starting point if you want to craft a more engaging online experience, however, they come with the possibility of lock-in by a single vendor or technology. Additionally, it might take up to one year for a DXP to be implemented. It is without question that monolithic solutions are impeding application leaders’ ability to swiftly develop and launch new experiences.

As opposed to today’s largely monolithic, all-in-one solutions, composable DXP applications should be built out of smaller units, so-called packaged business capabilities (PBCs) that are task-oriented and independently deployable. This means that instead of relying on a single product, you can craft your own DXP and use industry-leading tools of your choice. Only then will you be able to respond to rapidly changing customer and business demands. According to Gartner, “by 2023, organizations that have adopted an intelligent composable approach will outpace competition by 80% in the speed of new feature implementation.”2
