When content is discussed, everyone often imagines just text. However, most content would be far from effective without a proper visual segment.Images, videos, and downloadable files like PDFs, are vital in presenting information online. These files are your assets.

Choose your preferred approach

The first thing to do is to pick the right asset management solution. With Kontent.ai, you can choose between two approaches to your asset library:
  • Built-in asset library
  • Third-party digital asset management (DAM)
You can also combine the approaches. For example, you can use the built-in library for more static media, such as files and images, and a third-party solution only for assets requiring their separate workflow. This can also come in handy if you change your mind and decide to add or remove the third-party asset option. You don’t need to switch all assets at once, which gives you more time to migrate all assets and make the workflow more author-friendly.

Built-in asset management

The built-in asset approach is great because you use tools native to Kontent.ai, store everything in Kontent.ai, and don't need integrate and manage any other service. This is a good way to go, or at least start, as migrating your assets elsewhere later is always an option with Kontent.ai. Using the native asset library, you ensure your content and assets are managed and governed in one place.

Third-party asset management

The third-party asset management approach is the way to go if your requirements exceed the functionality of Kontent.ai’s native asset management. With a digital asset management (DAM) solution, you might gain more functionality than native asset management. The DAM might offer the same categorization and organization capabilities as Kontent.ai and more. The specifics vary based on the DAM provider you choose. What stays constant is the need to integrate the third-party solution into your content management workflow. For example, this might mean creating a custom element to enhance the Kontent.ai authoring experience so that content creators can use assets from the DAM directly. Keep in mind that using a third-party solution means you have one more service to manage and maintain, increasing the complexity and costs of your content management operations. This may also affect content creators’ productivity until they become proficient with the DAM solution.
Video streaming without DAMIf you’re after video streaming but don’t need a third-party DAM solution otherwise, you can create a custom element to upload and then embed videos using video hosting services like YouTube. Check out the custom element we use here for Wistia within Kontent.ai Learn.

Model your assets when modeling content

If you have a lot of assets, you likely want to clearly organize them and possibly add more metadata to them. You can do that for assets in both the asset library and in a third-party DAM.
